Small single pole mount ht transformer are mainly installed at consumer end. The rating of these domestic consumer ht distribution transformers is generally, 5 KVA, 10 KVA, 15 KVA and 25 KVA. Higher rating single phase HT or high tension transformers are installed at industrial consumer end, along side railway tracks for control circuits. This OLTC works in fully automatic way and maintains the secondary output voltage almost constant with an correction of +/-10 Volts. This OLTC is connected with HT side of transformer. Tapings are taken out from ht winding @1.5% to 2% ratio and connected with the OLTC.

The selection of conductor of HT and LT windings depends upon the costing of the transformer and space available at site for installation of transformer. In general, small rating single phase pole mount ht distribution transformers are would with aluminum conductor. This means both the windings, HT & LT would be wound with either copper conductor or aluminum conductor. Shape of Conductor may be round or flat. Generally, for HT winding round shape conductor is used and for LT round or flat any type can be used. Insulation upon the conductors can be paper or thread. In 95% transformer DPC or double paper covered conductor is used. Paper tape is wrapped in such a way that it covers half the width of the previous layer. You can insert layer to layer insulation paper in HT and LT winding coils. Oil ducts can also be inserted in higher rating transformers. The factors like radial width of HT coils, radial width of LT coil, various gaps and insulation contributes to the window width.

You can use various core grades of core laminations with different specific core loss to design low iron loss Single Phase HT transformers. Each core grade has a different lamination thickness value. This helps is controllinh the eddy current losses in the transformer core. Edyy current losses in a transformer can also be controlled by using multiple parallel conductors on LV side of transformer. After a certail current size we have to opt for multiple parallel conductors in LT winding of transformer. Generally, flat conductor is used for higher ratimg transformer for LV winding. Flat strips are used in axial and radial placement to make equivalant LT conductor area. Transformer Design Software is the best tool for all these requirements.
